This Is a Yard Sale the Dog Is in the Yard So Ill Ask Again How Much for the Dog
Thank you to our frenzied summer to declutter, we needed to get rid of all our actress stuff– and at that place'due south no ameliorate way to do so than having a yard sale that volition get out you with room to breathe AND loads of cash in your pocket! We had a garage auction this past weekend and counted up almost $900 buckaroos at the end of the solar day– Manner more than that nosotros expected, specially since we only sold i big ticket item. There were several tricks and tips that I believe led to our success so I wanted to share them with you lot– and hear your tips likewise!
Your Stuff: One thing that helped was to systematically declutter each nook of our home this summer. Each time I establish items for the auction I identify them in a pile in our basement. That pile was OUT OF Control, yo. Like, set up to invade our home at a moment'due south find. It was either take a yard sale or star-on-an-episode-of-Hoarders type pile. Fifty-fifty if you don't have time to totally declutter, hitting the major areas: kitchen cabinets, wearable, bookshelves, garage, basement. Do yous have extra furniture hanging out? Toys that are outgrown? Now's the time to let them become.
Know your Goal: Why are you lot having a yard sale? To get rid of stuff or make money? A little of both? Knowing your objective will aid when you are pricing, negotiating, and packing up the leftovers. On the fence with a price and just want to get rid of stuff? Go lower. Are you a series yard saler and will take another sale next year? Price what you lot'd like to go and hope to get it. Our goal was to become rid of stuff, then when negotiating nosotros knew to let it get rather that haggle as well much.
Advertising: These days, your best (and Free) advertisement will probably be Craigslist. I also paid $v to advertise online in my local newspaper (impress ads are outrageously priced here). Here's my tips for the perfect online Craigslist advertizement:
- Upload photos of some of your items for sale, put don't have them await creepy or disgusting. Seriously, y'all want people to be attracted to your sale and not written report you to the authorities. If you demand to crop or style it then do and so, simply brand certain the photos look inviting!
- Make it snappy. Put some personality into the ad. People commented on how much they enjoyed reading our ad because I attempted some lame humor in in that location. As always.
- Include a list of some of the types of items you'll accept. Got kids clothes that are college stop? List that! And if you have great prices on stuff, listing that too. It's one thing to know a seller has Ann Taylor clothing, some other to know it's merely $iii a piece.
I put this photograph in my ad and by 8:30am had sold $150 worth of kids dress.
Signage: Mayhap the best thing y'all can do for yourself is have excellent signage. Slap-up signs will hands lead people who read your ads to your auction, AND attract people driving past. Make sure the letters are slap-up and BIG. Put them on each major corner in your area, especially on principal streets. You only demand three things on your sign:
- the words Yard Sale or Garage Auction
- engagement and time
- a big pointer in the management to bulldoze
- address is optional; if it's not piece of cake to read while you drive by quickly, don't add it! Merely exist sure to take signs that pb to your home.
Here's 3 options for lawn signs if y'all don't have a pole to hang one. Record a sign to the side of a paper-thin box, driblet a brick or large stone within, and you lot have a great sign that won't blow away. If y'all have thou signs from work you've had washed, proceed them! Record signs to each side and you lot have an attention getter for sure. The Dollar Store often has Garage Sale lawn signs for only $ane, when you see them stock up.
Be a good neighbor. Collect your signs that dark. Littering is for dorks.
Pricing: Whew, this is a toughie. Conventional wisdom says to price at ane/3 the retail value, and that could concur true. Only times are tight, and then people won't always pay that amount. For example, I priced my clothes at $3 each and trust me they didn't cost $9 retail. Pricing information technology right allowed me to let information technology go AND make some money for a new fall wardrobe. 😉 It was helpful to ask my buds on Instagram about what to toll things, particularly furniture– they were very honest!
Put price tags on everything. Information technology'southward extra work just people actually don't want to inquire how much something costs every few minutes. For grouped items like books, hang a sign with the prices.
Here's what I priced the well-nigh common items, with some jerk room:
- Books: hardcovers $one, paperbacks .fifty, children'south paperbacks .25
- Kids Clothes (mostly Gymboree, GAP, & Carters) $2 a piece
- Kids Shoes (generally Pace Rite and Keens) $three a pair
- Women's Clothing (mostly Ann Taylor, Loft, Banana Republic, J. Coiffure) $3 a slice– I could do way improve on eBay just I wanted to get rid of it!
- Toys $1-$3
- Planters $2 each, Gift Bags .25 each
Group Like Items: This will actually help your sale! Put similar items together. I like to have a table of books, one of home decor, toys on a tarp on the footing, sports equipment, etc. Here'south a few examples of other things to grouping together:
- box of actress material pieces: toll it around .l a piece and scout them sell
- toys: group all those small abrasive things in a purse, price the bag for a cadet, sold!
- jewelry: jewelry is HUGE. Accept outdated pieces or costume jewelry? Cost it at .50 up to a few dollars, KEEP It AT THE CASHIER'S Tabular array, and you'll have a goldmine. I bagged each slice and laid information technology in a shallow tray, everyone took a look and it sold so quickly.
- kids clothes: if you have a lot of clothing in various sizes, it works well to accept information technology folded in boxes labeled by gender and size. This was a very pop item!
Display: Brand it look inviting. Tables are important, ask friends to borrow some if yous don't accept enough. Place your for-sale throw pillows on your for-sale chairs. One error we made was using our article of furniture for sale to agree boxes of stuff. In retrospect, I wish I'd borrowed a few utility tables for the volume and clothing boxes and kept the furniture looking it'southward all-time– perhaps with a lamp for some plates on summit instead of being covered by boxes. That being said, they looked great all lined up on tables and it was a groovy pinnacle for browsing.
We accept an IKEA wardrobe rack that I use year round in the basement, then it really comes in handy for the occasional thou auction. I needed an extra one so I fabricated it from two ladders and a pole held together strongly with duct tape!
Free Pile: Each time we have a k sale, we have a pile of free things that we identify by the curb. Carpet remnants, old plastic chairs, pigment cans, even my old teaching worksheets– information technology attracts drive-bys and anybody loves something for free. Be sure to denote your free pile in your online ad!
Afterward the Auction: If your goal was to get rid of clutter (similar mine!), so this is one of the most important steps. Load your leftovers IMMEDIATELY into your car, and drive them to a thrift store. When you go home you'll have your yard sale greenbacks in your pocket, a decluttered home, and probably exist totally exhausted yet fulfilled! I'll admit that we kept the piece of furniture nosotros didn't sell so nosotros could sell it on Craigslist, and my leftover kids' books are going straight to a Philly school.
On that notation, if anyone in the Philly expanse is looking for a deal on a java table / end table gear up, glider with ottoman, or a counter height kitchen gear up I'm your girl. HA!
There you have information technology, a few tips that volition help you take a ROCKSTAR garage sale. CASH Money in your pocket and a clutter free habitation– what exercise y'all take to lose? {Clutter! You'll lose your clutter!} What are your killer yard sale tips? Share 'em in the comments! And be certain to pin information technology for next summer if you're non gear up to accept a g sale this fall. You'll accept all wintertime to declutter, yous lucky peep!
