It'south no small feat to comprehend sixteen hundred years of history in 324 (Kindle) pages, and and then my hat (or crown, if I were a king) is off to Gareth Russell for a fine survey of a millennia and a half of the history of the English Monarchy. In his well-written and blithe narrative, kings and queens, princes, and dukes pass before the reader in glaringly honest detail. At that place are intrigues, scandals, secret plots, assassinations, jealousy, immorality, and every imaginable human weakness or temptation. And, aye, you volition also detect moments of sublime and noble leadership and grace.

This volume is both informative and entertaining, outset with the insurgence of the lady warrior Boadicea in 60AD, and ending with the passing of Queen Elizabeth in 1603. Along the way are some notable characters, in particular Edward I (Longshanks) and the notorious Henry 8. Because this is a survey of many years, independent in a relatively short book, I had to work occasionally to keep the names and events straight; just it was well worth the read, and always fascinating to see the many ways that vast power can impact the man psyche.

This was a really fun read, if I'g honest. However, since I accept a few books - maybe one/3 of which (give or accept a few) I've actually read - about specific points in English history, this was just a refresher for me. In improver, the volume's structure was a picayune bad-mannered, and I felt like there were some topics that could have been elaborated on more. These reasons are why I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5. This was a proficient read, though, and I do recommend

As a retired professor/dean in the medical sciences, and more importantly i who did non excel in world history, including English history, in the threescore's, this was a superb read. Gareth Russell kept my attention with his detailed and engaging writing style, and yeah his writing vocabulary had me "clicking" on words never encountered in scientific literature—we're all ignorant, just in different areas.

A windshield tour of Great U.k.'due south history

Having read a number of deep dive tomes on various monarchs and conflicts legendary to the present UK, I can say this volume misses a cracking deal of important detail. Still, it's an expansive even so also quick read that covers a lot of ground and connects countless dots. I enjoyed it immensely.

History of the English monarchy

An excellent read of the English monarchy. Hope the author writes a second volume from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth Ii. Will recommend and read more books from this writer.

Glad I Read It

As expected for a book with its scope, it was brief in dealing with each monarch. Definitely a good high-level expect at the history of the monarchy though.
